S.M.A.R.T. With Dogs: Dog Training and
Behavior Modification for Maryville, TN and surrounding areas

Our Most Common FAQs

1. What is positive reinforcement?

In B.F. Skinner’s theory of operant conditioning, it is described that when a behavior is strengthened by a stimulus it is likely to be repeated.  In other words, when a dog receives a reward (treat, toy, praise, etc.) for doing a particular behavior it is highly likely that behavior will happen again.

2. Why should I choose a certified dog trainer?

The dog training industry is still currently an unregulated field. Certified trainers have taken the time to educate themselves on the latest scientific techniques to teach dogs acceptable behaviors without using aversive methods. You wouldn’t want to see a doctor, therapist, or a personal trainer that isn’t using up to date methods to keep you healthy and happy, so why would you want anything different for your dogs?

3. What kind of tools or supplies do I need for training?

For the first session a flat buckle collar or properly fitted harness, a 6 ft nylon leash and  items that your dog finds the most reinforcing, whether that be high value treats, toys, or their favorite spot to be scratched! Other tools might be recommended throughout the training process.

S.M.A.R.T. With Dogs LLC does not allow the use of prong/choke/shock/e-collars. It is also not recommended to use retractable leashes.

4. Is the training process guaranteed to give me a perfectly behaved dog?

Behavior has no guarantee, there are many variables that can make all behavior unpredictable. And perfection is in the eye of the beholder. We will do our best to create an environment that allows your dog to do desirable behaviors for you and them!

5. Do you train aggressive dogs?

Please contact us to discuss your situation and we will do our best to help you and your dog!

6. Where do training sessions happen?

In the comfort of your own home! That’s right, S.M.A.R.T. With Dogs LLC comes right to you for all training. Your pup spends almost their entire life in your home. Once acceptable behaviors are established, we can start to work on achieving acceptable behaviors outside the home. Contact us for more information.

7. Do you offer group training? What if I have multiple dogs that need behavioral help?

At this time S.M.A.R.T. With Dogs LLC does not offer group classes, only private in- home training. As for homes with multiple dogs, each will have its own management and training plans, which would require individual sessions. Please contact us for more information.

8. Do you offer individual sessions, or do I have to book a package?

We do offer individual sessions. All dogs and their families must do a meet and greet consultation beforehand. Contact us for pricing and more information.

9. What is enrichment?

It is when the environment provides the dog appropriate ways to participate in natural behaviors to meet their needs.
